My Take on keeping photography simple AF
Photography is art. It’s supposed to be fun. Somewhere along the way, we turned it into this overly technical, way-too-f*ckin-serious thing.
So if you’re just starting out, forget trying to learn EVERYTHING. Focus on three things:
📸 1. Learn the exposure triangle
Shutter speed. Aperture. ISO.
That’s the absolute foundation.
You do not need to know what every bloody button, dial, menu, and obscure camera setting does before you can take a good photo.
Learn how those three work together and get out there.
🎯 2. Set your camera up properly. Know your gear.
This gets overlooked ALL THE TIME.
Get your autofocus sorted.
If you’re photographing kids, pets, sports, or basically anything that refuses to stand perfectly still, use continuous autofocus — usually AF-C or AI Servo depending on your camera.
And here’s my hot-take:
Put your white balance on AUTO.Yep. Auto.
That’s what I do.
You already have enough sh*t bouncing around your brain when you’re learning. Let the camera handle something for you.
🤘 3. Give yourself permission to suck for a while
Seriously. USE. THE. CAMERA.
Photograph your kids.
Photograph your friends.
Do some free shoots.
Photograph boring sh*t around the house.
Try weird sh*t.
Completely screw up your settings.
Take 400 photos and discover that 390 of them are absolute garbage. ✌🏻
That’s how you learn.
You don’t need another 49 photography tutorials saved on your phone that you’re probably never going to watch anyway.
You need to understand the important stuff and then go take a fu*k-load of photos until everything starts clicking. Pun absolutely intended!
That’s basically my entire philosophy on learning photography:
Keep it simple. Learn what actually matters. Then get out there and use the bloody camera.
Photography should be fun. Go make some sh*tty photos.
Eventually, they won’t be sh*tty anymore. 📸
